Flies
Seriously, and holy crap. So, long run today! I was doing great. While I’m not complaining about a little over 4 hours in my first real long run in months with barely any lead up to it, I have to say I could have and should have done much better.
Started out with some heavy rain. Which wasn’t actually too bad, it kept me cool and I didn’t need to worry about hydration for a fair bit. The problems started when the rain stopped and the Sun started to come out. Now, I am no stranger to adverse conditions, extreme heat, extreme cold, heavy rain, snow, midges flying in your eyes. So as it starts to warm up I see some flies buzzing around. They look like small houseflies, they don’t bite. No problem right? That’s what I thought too! As it dried up more and got warmer, more and more of these things are showing up. I have to start swatting them away before they land in my eyes or go up my nose. Here I am, trying to keep form and keep pace, and I have to swing my arms wildly to keep this swarm of flies off my damned face! Needless to say, by about mile 13 I was done. So it was a hard road back. You can see I slowed down significantly. It was just a matter of swatting flies after that.
So it was a new challenge and an experience. I suppose I can look at it that way, because it was literally maddening while it was happening, I actually cried a little out there. It was so disheartening. Physically and mentally is was draining. It really sucked and I need to look into how to make that never happen again. I’m glad they didn’t bite though.
In a couple weeks I will get back out for a long run, I think 21 miles was enough to get me through with an off-week.
Have fun, keep running, and remember; if Gil can run then so can you!
