A cold, rainy Tuesday

So I didn’t run, I’ll tack on a couple extra miles tomorrow and Thursday. Sometimes, even I am allowed to be lazy. So what will I possibly talk about today? How about the awesome United States Postal Service?
Some folks malign it, but they do a great job. First, the cost is so low. Case in point, if I mail a postcard in the US, anywhere in the world, it’s pretty damned cheap, it’s less than the cost of a stamp for a letter-size envelope. I once mailed a postcard from Vatican City…€1,50! That’s a little over $1.50. For a postcard!
But today, I had to ship my laptop to California. I needed a box large enough to fit the laptop and the power adapter. I got the large priority flat-rate box that would fit everything, loaded it up, and brought it down to the post office. $18.o0 later the computer was on its way and it will be there by Thursday. If I had sent it with a private company, to get it delivered in 2 days it would have cost me upwards of $90. To get it there for $25, it would have taken 4 days. People want to try and trash the post office, but the fact is they are good and they are cost effective. Plus, it’s a Constitutionally mandated government service. You can look that up. Article 1, Section 8:

Section. 8.

The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

To establish Post Offices and post Roads;…”

There’s a lot of stuff in there actually, but the Postal Service is my favorite. So thanks in advance USPS, keep up the great work!
To the rest of you out there, have fun, keep running, and remember, if Gil can run, then so can you!
